10-string Alto Stick 5+5 Custom Tuning Form
Please fill out the form below, which we will use to set up your instrument,
keeping your custom tuning specs on file for future string orders.
Explanations are provided for each parameter in the paragraphs below.
String Identification
Stick strings are identified by their position on the fretboard as
seen from the front. String #1 is on the right and #10 is on the left.
For your tuning you have chosen a guitar scale 10-string Alto Stick with two
groups of strings as shown to the right, numbered 1-5 and 6-10.
String Group Ranges: Accompaniment and Melody
In the table below, please identify each 5-string group as either an
"accompaniment" or a "melody" group. On the Alto Stick tuning, strings 1-5
are a melody group and 6-10 are an accompaniment group. The lower of the
two groups is the accompaniment group. If they are identical (like the Dual Guitar tuning)
, they should both be labeled "melody".
String Group Pitch Direction
Next we need to specify which string in each group is highest in
pitch and which is lowest. For example, a conventional bass or
guitar tuning would be "highest to lowest". In the case of an Alto
Stick tuning the melody strings (1-5) are "highest to lowest" and the
accompaniment strings (6-10) are "lowest to highest".
Identifying the Individual String Pitches
Please provide the lettered note name for each string in your tuning.
These would be the notes at the first playable fret, called the
"X-fret" on our guitar-scale instruments. They would be the same
lettered notes an octave higher at the 3rd inlay marker mid way up
the fretboard.
On our guitar scale instruments the lowest note is the F just above guitar
low E. The highest possible note is A above the guitars open high E string.
Choosing an Overall Gauge for Each String Group
To specify the gauge set for each string group, please select "light,
medium or heavy". Usually, we recommend using the same gauge set for
each group, but you can also mix them — medium bass and heavy
melody, for example.
