INTRO Hello All, Well February flew by at light speed. True, it is a short month but it feels like just yesterday that the last StickNews was flying out of my computer and into the digital wonderland we call the Web. Sometimes when I hit the send button and send off email I wonder if it's actually going where its supposed to go or if it just gets swallowed up in some cyberspace Never land. But, that certainly isn't the case with StickNews. I've been flooded with kudos, comments, suggestions and submissions over the last couple of months. Thank you to all for their kind words. Of course, as this issue proves once again, I'm merely the messenger, the real accolades deserve to fall on those who have contributed their music, insight and stories below. I know people are getting StickNews because they're showing up at gigs (like the one Bob Culbertson, Jim Meyer and I did earlier in the month down in Vancouver) and telling me. It was a real treat to have Bob pay a visit. Experiencing the passion he exudes while performing is always a treat. We played a couple of tunes together too, which was also a treat. And Jim, Bob and I all had the unexpected pleasure of playing with a wonderful percussionist named Elliot Polsky. Elliot was a bit of last minute substitution for the drummer Jim had originally lined up to play with us, none of us had played with him before. It was a bit of 'blind date', but this blind date had a very happy ending. It always amazes me when you make an immediate connection with a total stranger. It takes the right combination of time, space and personalities but when it works it can be overwhelming. In the case of musicians, there is a serious amount of trust and faith needed to let someone just jump on stage and join you, after all if the music sucks it's your name on the bill, not the hired hand's. But this worked, Elliot got right into what we were doing, added just the right bit of spice at the right time, followed his instincts and enriched all three of our performances. This issue seems to be about threes: three great lessons, three new discs at Stick Enterprises for you to check out. I'm sure I could stretch the three thing much further but I trust you get the idea. Thanks yet again for everyone's support, keep those contributions rolling in. Take care, Jim EVENTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND MORE WAYS TO SPEND YOUR MONEY From: Chris Crain [stickmusic@earthlink.net] Subject: Chris Crain [stickmusic@earthlink.net] Date: Fri 04/03/2005 I redesigned my web site early last month and added some new things I've been working on, during the past year. There are some new MP3s on the Music page: "Gypsies" and "Girl From Impanima" (from my CD Truth), and my version of Led Zep's "Rain Song". Also, I've added a small picture gallery to peruse. On the Books page, you will find a new text - "The Big Book of Polychords". The Polychord book is a free download and is what the title says. It contains plenty of material and will keep you busy with polychords for a long time. - Chris www.ChrisCrain.com From: Jim Meyer [jmeyer@parallaxinteractive.com] Subject: Western Canada Stick Retreat May 13-15 Date: Fri 11/02/2005 Greetings Everyone, The 2005 Western Canada Stick Retreat on Gabriola Island is a 3-day experience, amidst the beauty of the Gulf Islands, that is designed to help all Stick players reach the next level. From: Nandav8@netscape.net Subject: More Live Stick in PA Date: Wed 02/03/2005 I am continuing in my "opener" quest and really getting the Stick out to the amazed public! The wonderfully creative band, The Primatives, www.theprimativesrock.com, have made me their permanent opener and are very supportive of the Stick. Please check out their music at CDBaby. Here's where I will be in March: Friday, Mar 11 - the Coffee Den (1082 Bower Hill Rd. in the St. Clair Shops--across from St. Clair Hospital) 8:00pm Call 412-276-3365 for more info and directions. A friendly staff and good coffee and an excellent tea selection make for a very enjoyable atmosphere. It is primarily an acoustic open stage. All ages. Stu, the owner, is very Stick friendly and actually wants a Stick night to evolve. Anyone interested, please contact me. There is an old adage that gigs create gigs. The Coffee Den, and recently my full opener set at the beautifully restored Uptown Theatre, prove that out. The owners approached me for other nights. When asked how much I charge, I proudly said "$33 plus s/h!" Hey, who doesn't like a new set of Stick strings! Just get out there and make it happen. The crowds are more forgiving than you would think, and besides, you didn't hit a wrong note, you just were "improvising" around the right one! keep tappin' Dave Brosky - Pittsburgh, PA From: RitchieDrums@aol.com Subject: The Bi-Filter Date: Fri 04/02/2005 Hello Fellow Tappers! Electro-Harmonix has recently introduced a new Rack unit called the Bi-Filter. After working with it for a couple of hours, I found it to be a very versitile unit for Drums, Guitar or Chapman Stick. Three examples can be found on their Site. The first one is the Bass side of the Stick processed through both Filters. They have it posted as a Bass Guitar, but you will instantly know that it is My Stick. The other two MP3s are drums... Check It Out & Let me know what you think of the unit: click here Thanx! If you are interested please contact me soon and I'll be glad to answer questions. 1) Mindprint Envoice. This is a mic/pre/DI channel strip, with 3band EQ and tube compressor. It can be a perfect compliment to a Rane SP13, especially if you are looking for more robust bass. You can run the output of the Envoice into the SP13 Expand In. With the SPDIF output, you can route the line output of any other device into the Envoice, and it will send out 24bit/48khz stereo, combining the Envoice output with your other output, such as the SP13 melody output- very cool. It looks and sounds great. $350 2) Aardvark LX6 This is a quality PCI audio 24/96khz audio interface with a very nice, rugged breakout box. The box has 4in/6out, SPDIF and Midi. I have the latest ASIO driver for Windows $125. www.musiccenterinc.com/wwwAuto/Aardvark/5547.shtml 3) Mackie 1604 vlz pro It's in excellent cosmetic and working condition. Very clean. It was thoroughly checked out by Mackie about a year ago. $600. -Qua From: Barry Wood [barry@otheroom.com] Subject: For sale post for Sticknews Date: Tue 22/02/2005 A friend of mine bought an NS Stick a year ago and has decided that he's just not going to be able to put the time into learning how to play it. (Bob Dylan) MORE MUSIC THAN YOU CAN SHAKE A STICK AT From: SteveAFran@aol.com Subject: Steve's Spinal Column #3 Date: SUBSTITUTIONS PLEASE: In any chord progression, the creative musician can alter the written harmony using some very basic substitution rules. The ideas I will give work absolutely on paper. The feel of the tune and the desired overall sound should guide the applications. Let the player/arranger be the judge as to what works to his/her ear. Rule #1: Direct Substitution. For any chord you may substitute another with the same root and quality (Major, minor, dominant) i.e. 1- GMaj7 - GMaj6 - GMaj6/9 or 2- Gmin7 - Gmin9 - Gmin11 or 3- G7 - G9 - G7b5 - G7#9 etc. Rule #2: You can substitute a iiim7 for a IMaj7. Reasoning. i.e. CMaj7=CEGB Emin7=EGBD The notes of Emin7 are just the 3,5,7,9 of C. It serves as a CMaj7/9 Rule#3: Flat Five substitution. (See last Spinal Column for explanation) You may substitute a dominant type chord for another, a flatted fifth away. i.e.- G9 can be changed to Db7#9 A few more rules here From: "Chris Crain" Subject: Want to learn a song? Date: Thu 10/02/2005 So, you want to learn a new song? Let's learn a classic that you can digest in parts - "Chopsticks". With this tune, you will develop the syncopation of your left and right hands. Download the sheet music and we'll get started. You can find everything here From: Ron Baggerman [rbaggerman@galaxygypsy.nl] Subject: Etude with Attitude Date: Mon 17/01/2005 Hi friends and foes of latin/afro-cuban, The definition of the Clave on the formedia site: The Clave is a Spanish word, meaning key, the clave is serving as a skeletal rhythmic figure around which the different drums and percussion are played. The rhythm is often played with two wooden sticks called the claves. Whether played or not, it is implied throughout the music. Of course in the pop/rock it was Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly and many others who popularized this pattern. I only play the exercises on Gminor, but when you mastered this, try to play more different chords/notes using these rhythms. In the exercises you'll find 3/2 and 2/3 Claves to train in both right and left-hand. These first exercises are in series in other words the two hands alternate. One of the hands plays the Clave and the other hands fills this up with quarter notes or eighth notes. The entire "finger dancing" lesson is here NEW MUSIC ALL AROUND From: Glenn Poorman [glenn.poorman@autodesk.com] Subject: Back in the saddle. Date: Thu 10/02/2005 Hey all, After being off the circuit for a while due to the exit of our singer, and after the painful process of sitting through the parade of people trying out to replace her ... Coup Detroit are ready to hit the stage with our newest voice Julie Marcos. Our guitar player took a break from our tryouts to go grab a drink at his local coffee house and just happened to walk in when Julie was hosting an open mic. Impressed, he asked her if she'd consider working with a band and played her a CD of our material. She was enthused and came over to enthuse the rest of us. We've only been working with her a short time but we're already planning a couple of "coming out" shows in March. We've also managed to get her voice down on three of our demo tunes which you can hear on the web at www.coupdetroit.com/music/now Glenn From: StickNews [sticknews@stick.com] Subject: Three New CDs Dare: Fri. 25/02/05 Three new Stick CDs crossed my desk recently, each available through Stick Enterprises or directly from the individual artist's Web site. While new Stick music is always exciting, the best part of this particular listening experience is that these three discs are about as different as they can be from each other. Solo Stick, vocals, fresh interpretations of classic jazz tunes, progressive instrumentals with layers upon layers of Stick tracks-it's all there on these discs. A wonderful showcase of the huge variety of music one can create with The Stick. Emmett always said that he designed The Stick to be a blank slate for musicians to create and explore their own unique sounds. Jim Kam's Jimmy Nobody, Vintage Flight by Leo Gosselin and Uno by Mauricio Manchon prove just how different, wonderful and equally engaging Stick music and the musicians who play Stick can be. Read the reviews here THE LAST TAP What could I possibly add after all that except thanks for reading, go out and enjoy all the live music that will be happening this month, take in a seminar - I doubt you'll be disappointed and most importantly, pick up your Stick and play.
