GOOD TIMES AHEAD IN THE MIDWEST Hello All, Well summer is in full swing. And I do mean swing (and blues, bop, rock, country...). I hope everyone is finding some time to play a little Stick between lawn mowings, beach trips and family vacations. Maybe you’re travelling to Michigan this weekend for the First National Chapman Stick Festival and 2006 Midwest Stick Seminar. From all preliminary reports it looks like Glenn Poorman and Steve Oz have managed to put together another stellar event. I’m looking forward to the reports. Have fun and take care, Jim READ, HEAR, VISIT, WATCH From: SteveAFran@aol.com Subject: New Guitar Show Story Date: Fri 02/06/2006 On the Mel Bay Website (June edition) is a little write up of this year's Classic American Guitar Show. www.guitarsessions.com Steve Adelson From: irene@musicbrothersrecords.com Subject: news for Sticknews Date: Tue 06/06/2006 Hello All, Recently I have started writing for the Russian magazine MUSIC BOX. I have there a regular column dedicated to the Chapman Stick which includes my own articles and interviews of the series "The World Greatest Stickists". The latter appear on the onlinwe version of the magazine also in English. In the first two issues you can read the interviews with: GUILLERMO CIDES and EMMETT CHAPMAN Both interviews are really great, not thanks to my journalism talents, but to the wonderful, most interesting, extraordinary company I had pleasure talking to. And coming soon are the interviews with Don Schiff, Mick Karn (I also interview non Stick artists for other columns of the magazine) and other amazing artists! Keep tuned!! Thank you and have a great summer! Irene www.musicbrothersrecords.com/irene From: Steven Lamphear [stickperson@gmail.com] Subject: Stream of Consciousness Date: Fri 23/06/2006 Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you know that we have a full 9-minute song available for download now on our website. I am playing Chapman Stick (in addition to singing the non-operatic male vocals and playing the second guitar solo), so if you like complex progressive metal, hot chick bassist/singers, crazy guitar playing, operatic bass-baritones, and/or highly expressive drumming, you can find the mp3s here: Good Quality MP3 (128 kbps, 8.21 MB) Better Quality MP3 (192 kbps, 12.3 MB) We'll also be making another song (with even more Stick playing!) available for download within the next couple of days, so if you'd like to be notified when that happens, send an e-mail to FollowTheStream@gmail.com to join the mailing list. Thanks!!! Date: Fri 30/06/2006 Hi All , Yippee! Summer's finally here and I'm lovin' it- hope you are, too. Lots of things coming up in July that I want to share with you- hmmm...let's see, I hardly know where to start... First of all, special thanks to everyone who has purchased my new CD, "Waterfallin'." It has been my most successful release to date and I've received dozens and dozens of emails from people who absolutely love it. I'm gratified, to say the very least. To show my gratitude, I'm inviting you to a FREE FAN APPRECIATION CONCERT that I'll be giving at the Howe Park Community Center (here in Sacramento) on July 30th at 3:00 pm. It's a beautiful venue in the middle of a enormous, wooded park. It's family-friendly with playgrounds, fishing lake, fountains and picnic areas. Please put the date on your calendar now and come spend Sunday afternoon there on July 30th! (The hall only seats 200 people, so I'd suggest you come early if you want a good seat!) Not only is the concert FREE but there will also be a professional film crew (just like at a TV station's studio) shooting the entire concert LIVE. We'll be releasing my first DVD later this year and I'd like YOU to be in it! This will be a broadcast quality, first-class production that may, in part, be eventually broadcast on television, so you never know- that smiling face on the screen might be yours! As many of you already know by now- Simon Cowell did NOT call me back to appear on his new show "America's Got Talent" as the series premiered on June 21st, alas, without me... If you saw the show (like I did) you could tell right away that AGT is probably not the place for me, anyway. Most of acts left something to be desired and the format of the show is something like Survivor meets American Idol. Ugh. I just can't see myself competing against a 90 year old rapping grandma, a 76 year old male stripper or a trio of singing pirates in a love triangle with a miniature pony (really!) so.... it's back to the drawing board {sigh}. As promised, we've finished processing my last four video clips of past TV appearances. If you missed either of my appearances on 'Sacramento & Company' (on March 14th or April 11th) you can now view my segments in their entirety. They're great! There's also a clip of me with Mark S. Allen of 'Good Day Sacramento' last Christmas. You'll get a kick out of these- plus, you can now view the clips on both Macs and PCs! You can also hear the radio interviews I did with Kitty O'Neal of KFBK NewsTalk 1530 AM on May 2nd. Just click on my website link below to see and hear all these goodies. I've been digging through my archives and I've found a number of other TV and radio interviews that we're processing now and we'll hopefully have up for you next month. On July 9th in Auburn, I'll be in concert- again in trio with Damien Masterson {saxes/chromatic harmonica} and Mario Sebastian {percussion}. On June 21st, in Angels Camp, CA we performed for the Calaveras Arts Council and about 400 people came out to hear us- braving 100 degree temperatures, no less. The concert was- shall we say- totally HOT! And no one left. Amazing! I'll also be giving a solo concert in beautiful Genoa, NV next month on August 26th. Last year's concert was awesome (if you were there- you know what I mean!) Tickets go on sale for Tahoe Ridge Winery's Summer Concert Series on July 3rd. For ticket prices and ordering info give 'em a call at 775-783-1566. Well, that's all for now, folks. My July Performance Calendar is below. Hope to see you again soon- especially at the FREE FAN APPRECIATION CONCERT on July 30th. Until then... Date: Wed 12/07/2006 Hey everyone, You may have noticed our radio silence this last month (actually we got played on the radio but let's go with this...) Anyhow our great friend and drummer, Mark Nelson done got hisself hitched and up'ed and moved to Atlanta, Georgia to reside with his wonderful new bride. This band is especially precious to all of us and we realized that if we wanted to keep our momentum going we unfortunately had to find someone local who would be able to fill Mark's shoes (no easy task). After having auditioned several hundred drummers (ok six), a childhood friend of Amy's amazingly appeared in Los Angeles and in his first week here we were jamming up a storm. Nobody had really clicked with us until then and with Jared (that’s the gent’s name) we again started to feel the magic which had been so absent since our last show with Mark. We all truly wish Mark the best of luck in his new life, will miss playing with him, and we’ll all still continue to remain close friends. In the meantime, please join us in welcoming Jared to the Moving Picture Show fold - this is an exciting time for all of us. You can easily catch him in furious action as we return to SPACELAND next Tuesday. But the minor counterpart has quite a few variations:You'll have to go here for those variations: From: Chris Crain [stickmusic@earthlink.net] Subject: Music On My Mind Date: Fri 16/06/2006 Being able to entertain 'ourselves' is one of the great pleasures of being a musician. When the mood strikes us, we can make our own music - work on a new tune, practice, experiment, or run through our repertoire. Some of us can play for hours and for others, well. only a short time. For those of you with a limited repertoire, consider learning songs from songbooks or the Real Book. There is no shame in learning covers. You don't have to play them well, nor do you have to play them for anyone else. The point is to just play, instead of watching television because you're tired of practicing the one song you do know. Some benefits you may gain are: discovering new chords and progressions and improving your sight-reading. After time, you will be able to open most any songbook and entertain yourself without ever really committing a song to memory.
