Steve's Spinal Column #16

MINAH BIRD

The Full Sticktet

The Major scale has but one mathematical formula. Eight notes ascending thus:

        X _ _ _ _ _ _ X
steps 1 1 1/2 1 1 1 1/2

          C D E F G A B C
          1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

But the minor counterpart has quite a few variations:

In relation to the parallel Major (use C as above):

C pure (natural) minor = C D Eb F G Ab Bb C (relative of Eb Major)
                         1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 8

C harmonic minor = C D Eb F G Ab B C (raise the 7)
                   1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8

C melodic minor = C D Eb F G A B C (raise the 6 and 7)
                  1 2 b3 4 5 6 7 8

C dorian mode = C D Eb F G A Bb C (same as Bb Major)
                1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 8

C phrygian mode = C Db Eb F G Ab Bb C (same as Ab Major)
                  1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 8

C aeolian mode= C D Eb F G Ab Bb C (same as pure minor)
                1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 8

C blues scale= C Eb F Gb G Bb C (without Gb this is called pentatonic)
               1 b3 4 b5 5 b7 8

If we summarize, it's possible to play 11 notes in Cminor.
Composite of the above scales:

C Db D Eb F Gb G Ab A Bb B

Out of a chromatic scale (every note) only one tone is missing,
What is it and why?

First one to answer correctly (send to me directly) wins a lesson with Jim Reilly.
(a hockey lesson of course)
