WINTER BLUES ALREADY

At some point, I'd love it if every one of you came by and paid me a visit here in Calgary. But if I might make a suggestion, wait for a little bit - it's really, really cold right now. An early blast of winter has the thermostat dipping well below zero. That's all right for the middle of February, but it's only the end of October! Tonight is Halloween, and I feel sorry for all those little ghosts and ghouls who will be running around with frozen toes.

On to warmer thoughts, and nothing warms the heart and the hands more than pulling out your Stick and playing a little music. If you're looking for inspiration look no further than this months contributions from Ron, Chris, and Steve. It amazes me that these guys come up with new stuff every month. The 2006 Festival of Stick and Tap Guitar and Stick Seminar will be happening in Allaire, France, November 2-4. Tom Griesgraber and Ron Baggerman will be there. You can find information on the festival here http://perso.orange.fr/clacallaire/, and the seminar here www.afstg.com/stage06.php.

And finally, Michael Kollwitz has a new CD. Its called Waterfallin', and it is the first full-length recording to feature the Alto Stick. He was kind enough to send me a copy. My review is below.

Thanks to all who rushed to get their submissions in on time. The new formatting seems to be work well for all concerned. Thank you all for your continued support and encouragement. STAY WARM!

Take care,
Jim

Hi all,
Just home from the all too brief Tony Levin Band tour in California and now Jerry Marotta and I are busy rehearsing for our next adventure. We're headed back to Europe for what is almost a month long tour through Italy, Switzerland and France. The most recent information I have is below, though I think a few things are still in the works. As always, I'll try to post updates to my website as I get them.

Hope to see and meet some of you there!

Ciao!

More than a few of you have asked so here's an update. I just finished the last 2 tracks for our new CD today. Two more sessions for fixing and mixing and it will be done. Appearances by nine different guest guitarists. I'll be shopping it for a minute. If no interest, I'll release it myself. Stay tuned.

Thanks

Subject: November '06 Calendar + other exciting news
Date: 31/10/2006

The clock fell back an hour and the leaves are falling, too. Must be Fall, eh? That means Halloween candy, Thanksgiving dinners and (soon enough) Christmas cookies. I must be hungry; thinking and writing about food like this... LOL!

At any rate- thanks again to everyone who came to the release party on October 18th for my new DVD, 'Live In Concert' and my new digital download album, '20 Greatest Hits'. Everyone had a blast and gave my 8th and 9th releases a successful launch. We should do it more often, right?

The new DVD runs for 80 minutes and features 20 songs- all performed before a live audience on July 30, 2006. I know you want to see it so I've posted a professionally edited excerpt at MySpace.com and YouTube.com. Just click on my website {below} and you'll easily find the links. Hope you'll watch and- if you like it- please leave your comments! The more positive comments posted, the more others will want to see it, too. Like that old advertisement: "Tell A Friend"!

To the best of my knowledge, my new digital download album, '20 Greatest Hits', is the first-ever Chapman Stick album to appear on Apple iTunes.com. (It's also on Rhapsody, AOL Music, etc.). To download it, you'll need the free Apple iTunes software (if you don't already have it). Then just search the words 'chapman stick' or 'michael kollwitz' and it'll come right up. More info on this is at my website. If you have a minute, check it out.

For months, my family and friends have been telling me that I just absolutely must be on MySpace.com. I finally got up to speed so, now you'll find me on MySpace (and hear some great free music there, too). I hope you'll drop by and sign up to be one of my "Friends"- that would be awesome! (The new link is below).

And, last- but certainly not least- my webmaster genius son, Cameron, has re-constructed my entire website and, if I do say so myself- it's really quite amazing. The site now has an internal search feature which allows you to find anything you want in the archives (or on the site) by categories or keywords. It's also now set up more like a 'blog', so you can post comments or leave your thoughts (and reviews) on almost anything. The photo galleries have been upgraded and now work better than ever. If you want, you can now download the original, high resolution file of any photo or article. I think you'll really enjoy all these great, easy-to-use features (thanks to Cameron!).

Well, I guess that's enough for now. Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Scroll down to my November '06 performance calendar and see if I'll be in your area. As always, thanks for your support!

All the best,

~Michael Kollwitz

LESSONS FROM THE BIG THREE

From: SteveAFran@aol.com
Subject: Spinal Column #19
Date: Mon 02/10/2006

Knowledge of theory is very important in the music learning process. For this month's column I submit another excerpt from my forthcoming book. It will be published by Mel Baywatch and will deal with being saved from drowning in a sea of deep solos.

INTERVALS

An interval is simply the distance between any two notes. Like an inch or a meter in physical distance, these intervals are used to depict how far a tone is from another, sonically, which in turn will lead to building other useful musical tools.
The smallest interval (aside from micro-tones) in the natural musical language is called a minor second or a half step. An example would be, C to Db. The phrase minor second also implies the use of the second letter hence Db not C#. With any interval, the number stated refers to the amount of letters used. As we increase the distance between the notes by half steps, we have a notation system that is quite logical.
As we said, the number refers to the amount of letters covered and a prefix will allow for variables.
Seconds: C-Db =minor second ( ½ step)

C-D = Major second ( 1 step)

C- D# = Augmented second ( 1 ½ steps)

Subject: Transition Fingering
Date: 30/10/2006

This month, I would like to discuss playing chord shapes differently than what you might consider a conventional manner. Download the following file.

Chart

Assuming you have a few chord shapes instilled into your vocabulary, you've come to depend on specific fingers playing a certain role. That's good, because knowing that, you can quickly change chord shapes to suit a song's chord progression. However, sometimes using a different fingering methodology can facilitate the transition from one chord to the next.

Looking at the first row of chords, for example, you will see the typical LH fingering for this chord shape and an alternate fingering. The alternate fingering is better suited when making the transition to (or from) the last chord in the row. This might occur more frequently when arpeggiating between the two shapes.

The chart has three examples of these types of transitions. The chord names are irrelevant for the sake of this lesson. What I want you to consider, in your own music, is to think about how a chord relates physically to the next or preceding chord - not just musically. By understanding the physical relationship between two chords, you can often find a more efficient way of playing them.

From: Ron Baggerman [rbaggerman@yahoo.com]
Subject: Donkey's Years
Date: 18/10/2006

Hello All,

This month Ron continues exploring the possibilities with left hand arpeggios and right hand melodies. In the past months, the two hands have been playing independently, the left hand providing the foundation, the right hand adding the spice.

In this issue's tune, Ron takes the chord and melody style one step further. Both hands are doing the same type of thing as in the past, the left hand has its arpeggiated lines, the right covers the melody, but they're interwoven. It's as if left hand starts the thought and the right hand finishes it off. The results are some pretty nice melodic passages that weave their way across both sides of the board.

Wrap your fingers around 'Donkey Years,' then try this technique on other tunes and chord progressions. I use this technique all the time; I don't think you'll be disappointed.

A NEW VOICE AND NEW CD

From: Jim Reilly [sticknews@stick.com]
Subject: Waterfallin' - Debut of the Alto
Date: 31/10/06

It used to be, that if you wanted to show someone what a Stick sounded like, all you had to do was put on one of Michael Kollwitz's CDs. There is no finer example than Michael's of the left hand-chord, right hand-melody Stick technique. Now, you can play his latest release, Waterfallin', for anyone who asks what the new Alto Stick sounds like. Waterfallin' is the first full-length recording to feature the Alto Stick, and it's fitting that Michael is the first artist to bring the Alto to the fore. You see, he has been there, playing Stick, since just about the beginning. He started in 1976, and was one of Emmett's first students. His updated Website www.michaelkollwitz.com is like a trip the Stick history. Check out some of the photos in particular.

Those of you familiar with Michael's previous releases will recognize left hand arpeggios and the clear, clean Grand Stick with MIDI sweeteners on the melody side. That's present on Waterfallin' too, but on top of that, Michael has added the crisp, bright Alto. The Alto cuts through the mix and adds any upper register shimmer to eleven of the disc's fifteen tracks.
